Sarajevo is not a large city but there are many interesting day trips that start from this 400,000 people location. The city is perfect for those looking for a completely authentic European experience. Most of those that visit Sarajevo do it as they are drawn by history, bazaars, Ottoman architecture, a chic café culture and picturesque cobblestone streets. When you get out of the city, you manage to enjoy a lush countryside, unspoiled scenery and true culinary delights. With this in mind, here are the best day trips that you have to consider from Sarajevo.

During Bosnia’s Ottoman control, the city was a military center and a capital city. This makes the Ottoman influence here really strong. There were77 viziers that resided here and Travnik is currently a tremendous day trip option for those that want to leave Sarajevo a little. You will want to take a look at the Haji Alibery Mosque and 2 eighteenth century clock towers present. Make sure that you try Cevapcici when you visit. The dish can be enjoyed at Hari Restaurant.
Visegra
The main reason to visit the small town of Visegrad is an UNESCO World Heritage Site: Mehmed Pasa Sokolovic Bridge. The city is located on Drina River, which is renowned for the architectural masterpieces present. Mehmed Pasa Sokolovic Bridge is the work of Mimar Sinan and was built in the year 1577. This bridge has 11 stone arches. It is 180 meters long and became popular due to The Bridge Over The Drina, a Nobel Literature Prize winning book by Ivo Andric.
Lukomir
If you are looking for a truly remote experience, Lukomir is the day trip from Sarajevo that you want to be a part of. Lukomir is a really quaint village that highlights traditional Bosnian culture. The people living here do so in stone houses. Situated at an altitude of over 1.5 thousand meters, this is the highest and also the most isolated of all the villages in the country. The village is so remote that you will want to go on foot or by skis if you want to visit during winter up to April.
Konjic
This is an old permanent settlement with a history of close to 4,000 years. You will find it between Mostar and Sarajevo, being one of the really popular day trips in the region, mainly due to the natural beauty present. Prenj Mountain dominate the scenery and the main attraction here is definitely Kamena cuprija, a bridge built in the year 1682. Make sure that you also visit Boracko Lake since it is close-by.
