Bush Mountain stands out as the second highest of Texas’ peaks and the summit area is quite welcoming due to the soft grass carpet there as it appears in contrast with the desert floor that you see when you look down. There are some interesting desert views that you can see in every day of the year, with the main trail passing right close to the summit. You will not have problems reaching the top since the trails are quite easy.
Keep in mind that there is an entrance fee to enter since the area is a national park. If you are 16 or older, you will have to pay $5 to go into the park for one week. Dogs will not be allowed on many of the trails and are usually restricted to interpretive trails, campgrounds, parking lots and some dog-friendly trails.
Camping
The best camping option in Bush Mountain is offered by Pine Springs, at an elevation of 5,822 feet. The location of the camp is close to Highway 62/180. We are faced with a really simple camping area that is similar to what you would expect in a desert. Conveniences include flush toilet restrooms, pay telephones, potable water and drinks machine. No showers are available and you can stay in one of the 20 gravel sites. One site is limited to 2 tents or 6 people. If you come with an RV, there is a special camping area that features 19 RV sites.
If you do not want to stay in the camping area, there is the possibility to go backcountry camping. There are permits that are offered at the visitor center. You will be required to stay in the Guadalupe Mountains National Park and can only camp for up to 3 night. Remember that whenever you go on any of the Bush Mountain trails, you need to take water with you. Park rules dictate that you leave potable water that you find for the wildlife.
Seasons And Weather
The summers are really hot and the nights are quite cool, which is normal for such a desert environment. Some afternoon monsoon storms can hit during late summer. During autumn, you can expect the weather to be calm and cool, with colorful sceneries appearing. During winters you will need to be ready for the cold nights, even if warm sunny days can still often appear. The gustiest conditions are going to be found during spring as high wind warnings often appear.
