This chain of sharp peaks is found a few hours’ drive to the south of Port Louis. Created through volcanic activity, their irregular shape makes for some amazing scenery. • Le Pouce (beginner)
  • Lion Mountain (intermediate)
  • Black River Peak (beginner)

This volcanic crater has since been transformed into a lake containing a tiny island. On this island lies a Hindu shrine containing a massive, 108 foot statue of Shiva. According to local legend, it was made over a hundred years ago when a Mauritian priest had a dream about this very lake. After searching far and wide, he came upon the Grand Bassin and, recognising that this was the lake from his dream, built the shrine upon the island in its centre. These days, the temple holds religious significance plus the area boasts superb lakeside views.

Walk Under the Sea

If you’re looking for a more watery activity, the island certainly doesn’t disappoint. A popular pursuit is undersea walking which can be found in several coastal locations. Bookings can be made at all good Mauritius luxury resorts where complete packages will have you traipsing along the ocean floor with the marine life. No swimming ability is necessary here either, making this open for all travellers. Simply pick up your helmet and air supply and descend to three metres below the waves where you can enjoy the coral, fish and other ocean creatures.

Explore Black River Gorges National Park

In an effort to preserve the island’s native forests, the Black River Gorges National Park was created. This 16,250 acre piece of land contains a wide array of flora and fauna which visitors can enjoy via the many walking trails criss-crossing the region. Whether you’re an avid hiker or are happy with a simple stroll, this is certainly a recommended location. It is one of the island’s only areas where you can view the native animals in their natural habitat, making this a must-visit destination for anyone interested in flora, landscapes and exercise.
