Big Sur is really great for those that do not really like to go out at sea since the whale watching options here are basically land based. The California Big Sur cliffs involve hiking lovely beaches and coastal trails and will allow you to see humpback, gray and blue whales. As the whales are passing Monterey Bay, going towards the Bering Sea and Baja, you will see the whales. This means that whale watching is available all year round.

Ship traffic is really dangerous for whales as they go to the surface to take in some air and feed near the surface. There are currently just around 350 North Atlantic whales and around half of these will be seen in the Bay Of Fundy nutrient rich waters.
