Maui is a prime time destination that you want to visit in Hawaii in the event that you want to go windsurfing. We already talked about the best experiences that you can enjoy in the islands so let us now focus strictly on Maui, a place where you will find some of the best windsurfing beaches in the world. The area is basically restricted in the north shore opportunities and the south shore opportunities.
North Shore Maui Windsurfing Beaches
This is where most of the Maui windsurfing is done. The northeast trade winds do offer great waves lines that allow you to easily travel from Ho’okipa to Kanaha for great options. You will want to surely consider the following when windsurfing on the Maui north shore.
Hookipa
This is a premiere wave sailing location in the entire world and you will want to experience it in the event that you want something more challenging. You have a launch that is shadowed and quite difficult because of the strong currents. The waves will break at around 100 yards from your launch destination, with waves that can easily take you to unforgiven rocks.
The big waves that are so appreciated by experts and advanced windsurfers will appear during Spring, Fall and Winter. That is when various competitions are held and when the pictures are usually taken. If you travel to Hookipa during the summer, the conditions are better for the intermediate and beginner windsurfers. You just have to be careful with the launch since this can be difficult.
Camp One
This is an area that is to the north of Kanaha Beach Park. It is practically a houses camp and you will need to rent one in order to have a direct launch. You get different sandy dunes close to Stable Road and a downwind from Sprecks. This is where cold launches are possible. However, you are not allowed to do this. Alternatively, it is possible to sail from Kanaha to Camp One. The main advantage of windsurfing in Camp One is that the region is not at all crowded.
Kanaha
Kanaha is also a really good windsurfing location in the north shore of Maui. The problem is that this is where you want to travel to only if you are an expert or even an aspiring pro. There is a large park present here with various sections, many sandy beaches and parking opportunities. You will choose from two sailing areas with the Lowers being the one with smaller waves and lighter winds.
South Shore Maui Windsurfing Beaches
Kihei
On Maui’s South Shore the best possible windsurfing opportunity for you is visiting Kihei. Most of the winds come from the north with only some coming from the south. Kihei beaches do have strong winds and that means that you have to be a little careful. Slog sometimes appears when going along the windline. The most popular launch for windsurfers in Kihei is a park close to South Kihei Road. The launch is nice and sandy and sailing can be a little gusty and choppy when faced with north winds.
