Karnala Bird Sanctuary stands out as a wonderful place to have a break from the city. You go there in order to watch wildlife, greenery and birds. You can trek or picnic in an area that is simply tremendous. You will quickly notice the fact that the sanctuary is located just a really short drive away from Mumbai. It may be a small bird sanctuary, covering close to 5 square kilometers but it does house around 37 avian migrants and 150 resident stunning bird species. The vegetation you find is quite interesting, characterized by species like mango, asana, kalam, kulu, Koshimb, umbar and many others. Because of ecological conditions, a huge bird population can be seen. All forests are ideal as a harbor for wild animals. You will feel really happy while hearing the birds singing in the air.

Karnala Bird Sanctuary simply abounds in bird life. During October to April, the migrating season, there are over 140 species that can be recorded. Karnala is a popular bird sanctuary but you can also see more wildlife that is attractive, like four-horned antelope, langur, muntjak and wild boar.

There are 2 main seasons that the bird-watcher should be aware of. You will be able to see various interesting birds when rains are close and near the forest you can see birds that are nesting. During winter, you will see migrants that take over. The entire bird life changes. This includes various species like bluethroat, blackbird, ashy minivet and the red breasted flycatcher.

Remember the fact that monsoons are quite severe in the region. You need to be sure that you avoid everything in the period between June and August. The best time to visit as a bird watcher is October to April.

All Mumbai visitors will want to visit the Karnala Bird Sanctuary. The same can be said for residents of Thane. Local tourists that visit every single year sum up to one hundred thousand. Since you are there, you will want to visit the Karnala Fort and visit the Nature Interpretation Centre.

Endangered birds can be seen in Karnala Pinnacle, like king vulture, crested serpent eagle and peregrine falcon. You will also, most likely, love the barking deer, the muntjak and African monkeys. The leopard will rarely be spotted but it is a great experience.

Safety

Looting incidents are quite rare but it is a good idea to be a part of a group. There are huge honeycombs in top pinnacle but if you are with a kid, you have to be careful. Trekking mostly takes place during a jungle so be sure that you have a first aid kit with you. Sunscreen and mosquito repellent are also recommended.
