Los Angeles offers many interesting rock in-house rock climbing routes at many climbing gyms but you will eventually get tired of them. The hard plastic holds are definitely not the same thing as when you climb real rock routes.
The great news is that the Southern California deserts give you access to some wonderful rock climbing opportunities. We focused on those that are really close and accessible from Los Angeles. Do consider them for a really great rock climbing experience.
Joshua Tree Rock Climbing
You will have to spend some hours on the trip to Joshua Tree from the city but once you get there, you will say that it was completely worth. There are basically thousands of interesting climbing routes and many boulder problems to tackle. We can say that Joshua Tree is perfect for absolutely all skill levels, with climbers completely enjoying themselves, no matter if they are beginners or professionals. You can easily make the trip a weekend adventure project since camping offered is great, although limited and requiring advanced reservations.
Vasquez Rocks Rock Climbing
You would go rock climbing to the east of Los Angeles. Many say that this spot reminds them of Mars, thus being a perfect backdrop for movies. You should know that many successful movies were filmed here including Start Trek and Tremors. The rock climbing adventure is diversified, with thirty interesting climbs. Only top roping climbing is available.
Echo Cliffs Rock Climbing
You can find Echo Cliffs right close to PCH (Pacific Coast Highway). This is definitely a great backcountry crag located in the scenic Santa Monica Mountains. The only problem in this case is the fact that the area should only be tackled by the experienced rock climbers. It is graded as a moderate climbing region though so you do not need to be completely professional.
Point Dume Rock Climbing
The atmosphere at Point Dume is one that is great with a lot of sun and sand. You will feel that everything is different and your worries will be far away. The scenic backdrop is definitely great and you will be able to start climbing right from the beach. During the weekends you will not really want to go rock climbing at Point Dume because it can be really crowded. You want to go at an early hour if visiting during the weekend or you can be safer and simply go rock climbing during week days.
Stoney Point Park Rock Climbing
This is a truly iconic location that rock climbers would enjoy. In the history of rock climbing the location does have a huge history as this is where Ron Kauk and Bob Kamps first started to climb. You will find the Stoney Point Park in the Topanga National Park, close to PCH. You will be able to enjoy over 150 rock climbing routes, varying in levels from beginner to advanced.
