When it comes to skiing, it is common knowledge that France offers tremendous opportunities. After all, we are talking about the Northern Alps, which have so many skiing regions that you can appreciate.
We tried to make a list of the best ski resorts in France and it was quite obvious that there were so many that the choice was hard to make. There is just one word to describe all the ski resorts that we mention below: majestic. We are sure that any one of them would be perfect for you.
La Grave Ski Resort
This is a fearsomely wild and beautiful ski area. While it is a little difficult to describe it with the term “Resort”, it is one skiing destination that you want to try in the Southern French Alps area. There are no snow cannons, no avalanche control, no ski patrol, lifts are minimum and you do not have access to groomed runs. There are 7,000 feet of vertical ski options available and you should only consider if you are experienced. Adventure is something that you will surely gain here.
Alpe D Huez Ski Resort
The area is known as an “island in the sunshine” and this is quite correct. We have over 300 sunny days every single year, epic scenery, a really varied terrain, a tremendously well developed lift system and options available for skiers of basically all levels.
Alpe d’Huez is basically a sprawling village that is purpose-built and set on a flank that mainly faces south-based mountainside. The region was actually built for the 1968 Olympics so you can easily expect to gain access to some really great skiing options.
This resort is not too expensive but it is among the most popular due to the scenery and really varied terrain options available. Most skiing trails are at high altitudes of over 1800 meters. Snow coverage is almost always perfect.
Serre Chevalier Ski Resort
This ski domain covers over 4,000 skiable terrain hectares and 250 kilometers of groomed pistes. You will find it in Haute Alps, right on the foot of Le Parc L’Ecrins, the biggest glacier national park in the country. There are three ski villages that you can consider in the resort: Le Monetier-les-Bains, Chantemerle and Villeneuve. You also have access to Briancon, a historic town you will want to visit, together with 9 more villages in a 14 kilometers area. All villages are simply charming.
The highest of the villages is Monetier les Bains at 1,500 meters. However, skiing can start at even higher altitudes. You gain access to opportunities for decent from 2,800 meters to 1,200 meters, all across open areas and through really attractive forests. You will love your stay here.
