Thanksgiving, for most people, is all about family and turkey. However, those that love to travel might want to experience something different. America is renowned for its Thanksgiving celebrations but this does not mean that you cannot enjoy this holiday in Europe.
It is definitely not too late to plan your Thanksgiving European weekend getaway. Choose any of the following cities for a wonderful experience.
London
In London you can easily kick off celebrations with a Harry Potter experience. Between November 16 and January 26 you can be a part of the Christmas celebration known as Hogwarts in the Snow at Warner Bros Studio. This allows you to explore large parts of the Harry Potter studio. You can also see some intricate movie props, drink Butterbeer and experience Diagon Alley.
During Thanksgiving, London is an inspiration. On November 21 there is Winter Wonderland starting in Hyde Park, without an entrance fee. Then, do whatever you want, like ice skating, watching live performances and getting on the huge Ferris wheel.
Lisbon
Portugal’s Atlantic Coast is a true bohemian paradise. Temperatures are mild and you will surely appreciate the local cuisine, just like the renowned Port wine. Enjoy the distinct architecture of the city and the vibrant neighborhoods that are simply art.
If in Lisbon, check out Torre de Belem and the Jeronimos Monastery. Also, be sure to take some free time to enjoy nature. Lisbon is the 2020 European Green Capital. Besides, the culture scene is vibrant, like with the Modern Art Center, which is where you can enjoy stunning contemporary art.
Edinburgh
Edinburgh is known as an intellectual hub. Countless people that studied education, engineering and literature spend their days there. After London, Edinburgh is the second most popular destination for travel because of the incredible amazing cultural festivals and medieval buildings.
Different events and festivals are held in the city in November and you can enjoy Princess Street, which is already decorated for Christmas. Numerous spectacular landscapes wait for you and you can visit many different castles that are centuries old and scattered all around the countryside. This includes the most photographed castle in the country, Kilchurn.
During Thanksgiving, the city becomes magical. It looks as it is taken right out of a folklore storybook. Enjoy everything with tasty Scottish scotch.
Paris
Paris, “The City of Light”, is also magical during November. Autumn foliage covers the streets and Instagramers simply love the scenery. You can simply stroll the streets to enjoy your time.
Obviously, if in Paris, be sure that you enjoy some of the gastronomy. Then, you want to check out the Eiffel Tower and if you have enough time, the Louvre. As a fashion lover, check out the Yves Saint Laurent Museum.
Barcelona
This city features countless art experiences for travelers. You will want to see the masterpieces of Antoni Gaudi, including the La Sagrada Familia. Just be sure that you book in advance. If you love Gaudi, also check Parc Guell and Casa Batllo.
When looking for some adventure, move over to the Monserrat Monastery. Then, trek on one of the numerous hiking paths. Those that love Game of Thrones should also discover Girona, which is a medieval town that is located right out of Barcelona. Some scenes from the movie were filmed then. At the end of the day, you can enjoy some tapas.
Vienna
Last but not least, we cannot talk about a European Thanksgiving getaway without mentioning Vienna. This Winter Wonderland features heartwarming illuminations, bustling markets and it is no surprise that it is a favorite for travelers because of its Christmas market. It opens in November and is one of the best experiences you could enjoy in the continent.
